Laymen's Cup Podcast

The Laymen are four men, who love God first, then their wives and children. We have a deep desire to study God’s Word and to live on mission for him. As we study God’s Word, we love to break it down and discuss it in a way that everyone can understand. We are not scholars, even though some of us wish we were. We are normal men with normal jobs trying to figure out how to Glorify God and live a life on mission for him.

In this Friday preview we discuss the upcoming show on Resolutions.

Jan 10, 2016

In today's episode we are continuing to discuss the doctrine of election, a conversation that we started with our good friend, John. In this is part of the conversation we begin to break down the difference between Arminianism and Calvinism. We have found that there are many people who camp on either side of the argument, but do they truly know the difference? For instance, can you truly say you are a Calvinist if you do not know what Arminius wrote, and how can you be an Arminian if you do not know what Calvin wrote?

We have spent a lot of time on this topic. Even though it is a open handed issue, we feel it is an important one. We have received a lot of engagement from our listeners on these shows. That is what we love. We love to hear from our listeners, even if you do not agree with us.

Thank you for listening. If you are listening on iTunes please subscribe and leave a review. If you have comments or questions for us, you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com. We also have videos you can view here on our website or on Youtube. We are on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laymenscup. You can also follow us on Instagram and Twitter @laymenscup.

We have started to broadcast parts of our show on Periscope. If you would like to interact with us as we record, follow us on Periscope @laymenscup and listen for the whistle to alert you that we’re live, usually on Wednesday nights!

It is always our hope to get the Gospel out to as many people as possible and you can help us by sharing the show. Word of mouth is the greatest way we will get the show out to the masses. Thank you.

Please pray for us, as we are praying for you.

The Laymen

Kemp, Patrick, Shaun, Wes, and John (honorary Laymen).

Jan 7, 2016

In this preview we catch the listeners up on the second part of a discussion we have about Arminianism vs Calvinism. We also start a discussion on infant Baptism.

Jan 3, 2016

C.S. Lewis said in Mere Christianity "Because free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having." Great theologians like John Piper and Tim Keller would say that we do not have free will. Who is right? There are great Godly men on both sides of the topic. This is the question that fueled this episode.

In this episode we have a special guest. We welcome an honorary Laymen, John. John recently graduated law school, and is now studying to sit for the Bar Exam in February. After episode 25 came out, John quickly texted the Laymen with questions and comments about the doctrine of election. Since Wes had to travel for his job this week, we thought it would be great to bring John on and have him be a part of the discussion on Calvinism. Being a trained lawyer, John did an amazing job challenging us and driving everyone of us to the Scripture.

We tried something different this week as well. Part of the episode was broadcasted on Periscope. You can follow us with the same handle @laymenscup. If you would like to interact with us as we record, follow us on Periscope and listen for the whistle to alert you that we're live, usually on Wednesday nights!

It is alway our hope to get the Gospel out to as many people as possible. Please share the show. Word of mouth is the greatest way we will get the show out to the masses. Thank you.

Please pray for us, as we are praying for you.

If you had the chance to listen to the Bonus Material that was put out on Friday, 12-25-15, you got to see a glimpse of what we do on a daily basis. This is how we spend a lot of our time; discussing theology. If we are not together, we are texting one another. This is what we do. In this show, we continue that conversation. We all agree that the doctrine of election is an open handed issue, but we do believe that it is an important one. In this episode, Shaun asks the others questions that he believes are valid questions from the Bible. One question is: How do we view election in the totality of Scripture?

The opening of the show is a sermon jam from YouTube called "How He Loves Us - David Crowder (Matt Chandler & John Piper)." You can view it here https://youtu.be/suMhQ3ETCyI. This shows what is important to us, and that's the Gospel. We love discussing theology, but we hope our listeners know first, that we are sinners, and because we have sinned, we need a savior. That savior is Jesus, who came to Earth to live the perfect life we couldn't live. Then he died on the cross and took on the wrath of God so that we wouldn't have to. He rose from the dead, and is alive now and because he is alive, we will go and be with him one day.

We are excited that this is our 25th episode. We can't wait until we celebrate our 250th episode, but, we can't do it without our listeners. Please share the show. Word of mouth is the greatest way we will get the show out to the masses. Thank you.

Please pray for us, as we are praying for you.

The four us always have great theological discussions, and most of the time it is off the show. We sat down to record a Friday Preview and a theological discussion broke out. This is a glimpse of what we do though out the week. Merry Christmas and enjoy.

Dec 19, 2015

John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..." I have heard it said that God's greatest miracle was creation. Out of nothing, God created the Universe, Earth, and more importantly human kind. The second greatest miracle is that God, the creator, visited his creation in the flesh. In the form of Jesus, God came to Earth to fulfill his promise to redeem his creation.

In theological terms, this is call the Incarnation. This means Jesus came to Earth and was born of a virgin. This idea is clear in scripture, and for the Laymen, this is a closed handed position. In this episode we discuss the importance of this event. Jesus had be born of a virgin.  Not only is this portrayed in the Bible, but for his sacrifice to be perfect, he had to perfect and therefore he could not have been born in the natural way. I do not want to give away the rest of the discussion, but please listen to help grasp the importance of this topic.

We are introducing a new segment in this week's show. "Out of Line: the Atheist Moment of the Week." Atheists try to use the Bible to prove that he does not exist, yet this seems to prove the Bible over and over again.

Thank you for listening. If you check out the show and like what you hear please go onto iTunes and leave a review. If you have any comments or questions you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com.

If you would like to try the coffee we are drinking on the show you can go to Shaun's Coffeeshop and buy a bag.

Lastly, please share the show with your friends and family. It is our goal to get the Gospel to as many people as possible, You can help by sharing us on social media, and most importantly, by word of mouth. Thank you.

Please pray for us as we are praying for you.

In this Friday Preview you will get a rare glimpse of what we do. We started a conversation about speaking in tongues while on a break, and continued it on air. Enjoy.

Dec 12, 2015

The Laymen are excited about the Christmas season. No doubt by this time of the year, you have a Christmas tree in your house, stockings might be hung, you might even have lights that decorating the outside of your house as well. Why do we do these things for Christmas? Where do these traditions come from? Can you celebrate this season and still live on mission?  These are important questions that are asked in this show.

What does the Christmas Season mean to you? Is it a time to go and buy presents and see what you get in return? Your motive has a lot to do with how you will spend this holiday season. There seems to be two extremes: one where people immerse themselves in the season, and get lost in the real reason for it, and the other where people do the opposite and refuse to celebrate. Patrick makes a great point that you can be in the middle. Don't seclude yourself away so you can't enjoy the holiday season, but also remember that for us as Christians, we are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, no matter where the tradition came from.

Thank you for listening. It is our mission to share Christ with as many people as possible. The best way for us to grow is for you, our listeners, to share the show. If you would follow us on social media, and share or retweet our posts it will go a long way. You can follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laymenscup. On Twitter and Instagram @laymenscup. If you are listening on iTunes, please subscribe and leave a review. You can also email the show at laymenscup@gmail.com

Pray for us, as we are praying for you.

Today, we give you a preview of what is coming up in the future, and we have a lot of fun doing it.

Dec 5, 2015

A few weeks ago the Laymen discussed the importance of politics in the episode titled "Does your vote count?" In that show we discussed how important it is for every Christian to be educated in politics and to use that education to vote wisely. In this episode, we discussed politics with the co-author of "One Nation Under God: A Christian Hope for American Politics," Dr. Bruce Ashford.

Dr. Ashford is the Provost and Dean of Faculty for Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Campbell University, his Master of Divinity and Ph.D from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He co-authored "One Nation Under God: A Christian Hope for American Politics with Chris Pappalardo, who is the lead researcher and writer at Summit Church in Raleigh.

In the past episode, one statement the Laymen made was "if you are a Christian and not involved in politics, you should be." We are called to be obedient to our government, and part of that is voting. You should education yourself in what you believe and why you believe it. If this a new concept to you, this book is where you should start. It will teach you the importance of Christians voting their faith. If you are interested in politics already, this book will encourage you in the process of government.

One link we would like to share is Votesmart.org. This the resources Patrick mentions in the show.

This book is out now and you can find it in the Laymen's Cup Bookstore. It is a great read that you will not want to put it  down. Thank you for listening. If you have any comments you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com. If you are listening on iTunes please subscribe and leave a review. You can also find us on all the social media outlets, twitter and Instagram @laymenscup, Facebook.com/laymenscup.

It is our goal to get the Gospel to as many people as possible. To do that we need our listeners to share the show. Go and tell your friends, co-workers, classmates. Ask them to check out four guys who love the Lord, and love to live on mission. Thank you so much.

Pray for us, as we are praying for you.

Nov 26, 2015

In today's episode, we wanted to continue a series we started previously. We started reviewing the most misquoted Bible verses. These verses are commonly used in the culture today, but in most cases they are taken out of context. In the first episode in this series we went over Philippians 4:13. Today we discussed Jeremiah 29:11. If you walk into any Christian Book store will see "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you." It is printed on t-shirts and inspirational posters, and it is meant to be an encouragement to people. The question we ask is: what is God really saying in this verse?

With any verse you read, you must keep in mind the context that it is written in. Jeremiah is writing about a prophesy that God shared with him. This prophesy is foretelling the judgment of God concerning Israel and their disobedience. After discussing this verse, we came to the conclusion that when put in the correct context, this verse is more encouraging than the misinterpretation that is used today.

We want to say thank you for listening. It is a real encouragement to us to hear how God is using the show. If you would like to email the show and let us know how God is moving in your life you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com.

The Laymen are also on all the social media sites. Our handle on twitter and Instagram is @laymensup. We are on Facebook as well at Facebook.com/Laymenscup.

If you are listening on iTunes, we would appreciate if you would give us a review. Every 5 star review we receive, we will read on the show. We love the engagement we receive from our listeners.

Please pray for us and know that we are praying for you. It is our goal to reach as many people as possible with the Gospel. Each time you share the show with a friend or co-worker, you are helping us reach new listeners. Thank you!

In this preview we discuss the upcoming episode and current events. Also, ever wonder what is Kemp's favorite side dish. Happy Thanksgiving.

Nov 22, 2015

Last week the Laymen discussed the authority of Scripture. In that episode we stated that as Christians, we need to read the Bible as that is how God reveals Himself to us. The question in this episode is; how do we read the Bible? We all agree that we must read the Bible redemptively. What does that mean? It means that we read the Scripture in the light of the Gospel. Even in the Old Testament, the purpose is to point us to the Cross.

This being a big topic, we invited Dr. Chris Griggs to help the Laymen explain how to read the Bible redemptively and why it is important. If you are a frequent listener, Dr. Griggs is not a stranger to you. He is the Pastor of Denver Baptist Church. The main thought that he gave us is to ask five questions as we read the Bible.

1. How does this passage show the character of God?

2. How does this passage show my need of a savior?

3. How does this passage point me to the cross?

4. How does this passage show us the love of Christ?

5. How does this passage equip me for the mission?

Thank you for listening. Make sure you follow us on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/laymenscup and on twitter and Instagram @laymenscup. We are also on YouTube, please go and subscribe. Please share our page with others you think would enjoy the show.

Nov 19, 2015

In this Friday Preview we discuss the upcoming episode, where we discuss how to read the Bible. Also we discuss the Refugee situation.

Nov 15, 2015

A few weeks ago the Laymen discussed the Reformation. Out of the Reformation came the idea of the Solas. One of them is called “Solas Scriptura,” which means “Scripture Alone.” The idea of this Solas is that Scripture has authority in a person’s life. We do not hold to this because of the Reformation. We believe it because of Scripture itself.

2nd Timothy 3:16 tells us that “All Scripture is God breathed.” We know that the Bible comes from God. Everything that we are to know about God is in His Word. The Bible describes everything we need to know about Salvation, about God’s attributes, and about his mercies. For most Christians, this is not a new revelation, they would be in full agreement. How does this translate in your beliefs? People either hold tradition, experience, or Scripture as their authority. Which one should reign? Whichever one holds the most weight will determine your belief system. After this episode you will be able to determine if a person really holds Scripture as the authority in their lives. Does God still speak? Sure he does, but only through his word.

Nov 12, 2015

In this Friday Preview we discuss Monday's episode on the Authority of Scripture and we discuss the red cup issue.

Nov 8, 2015

It has started. Now that it has started, it will not stop for an entire year. It is not safe to turn on your radio or tv until the first Tuesday of November, 2016. Of course I'm talking Political ads. Every time we turn on the radio or television there is a commercial or a discussion about politics. During this season of political ads many questions come up. Should I vote? If I vote, will my vote matter? Who should I vote for? These are the questions that the Laymen discuss in this Episode.

As a group, we believe that it is your duty as a Christian to vote. We believe this because Romans 13:1 tells us that we are to be subject to our government. We are subject to our government by obeying laws. We have a unique opportunity to be a part of our government through the process of voting. There is a caveat to our obligation, do not vote unless you are informed. It is dangerous to vote without knowing who and what you are voting for. We encourage our listeners to be informed by doing the research on the candidates and the issues they discuss. Find out what you believe, and more importantly why you believe it.

Thank you for listening. Make sure you follow us on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/laymenscup and on twitter and instagram @laymenscup. When you and follow us, please share our page. While you are here reading our show notes, please sign up and subscribe to “The Barista,” our monthly newsletter.

Nov 5, 2015

In this Friday preview we discuss the upcoming episode. In Episode 18 the Laymen discuss politics. We ask the question, why should Christians vote. Thanks for listening. Make sure to check out our website at www.laymenscup.com

Nov 1, 2015

In this episode, the Laymen have a discussion about the Reformation. The Reformation was an event that focussed around three men in the 16th Century, Martin Luther, John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli. Through several events, these men attempted to reform the church of the day, but instead, changed the world as we know it.

During the 16th Century the Catholic Church became corrupt. They began to sell indulgences. These were certificates that guaranteed entrance into Heaven. How did you receive one of these certificates? You purchased them. It was a way the church was attempting to raise money. The Reformers realized there was a problem with this and then Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of a church, and history changed forever.

What does the Reformation have to do with us today? Out of the Reformation came an idea of five Solas. They are Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, and Glory to God Alone. As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the ultimate authority. We believe that we are saved through Faith in Christ alone, by His Grace and for His Glory. While all of these ideas are found in the Bible, the Reformation helped us understand them.

Oct 30, 2015

In this Friday Preview we discuss the next episode, why is the reformation important today. One of our own goes overseas to serve, and most importantly we lay down the Gospel.

Oct 23, 2015

1st Peter 3:15 tells us to "honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to give a defense." The Greek term used here is "apologia," this is where we get the word "Apologetics." This is a study in Christian theology that defends the faith. A champion in Apologetics is Dr. Alex McFarland.

Alex has spoken at over 1,500 churches throughout the years. A quick search on Youtube will show the many times he has appeared on Fox News and other programs debating Atheists. He has written several books on Apologetics, including his newest book, "21 Toughest Questions Your Kids Will Ask about Christianity: & How to Answer Them Confidently."

Alex attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He received his Master's Degree in Christian Thought/Apologetics at Liberty University and received his Doctorate from Southern Evangelical Seminary, where he has also served as President.

It was a true honor to sit down with Alex and discuss some of the basic ideas of Apologetics. Every Christian, at some point in their walk, will use Apologetics. When you are asked the question "why do you believe in the Bible," how will you answer? This is why Apologetics is so important. In the culture we are living in today it becomes increasingly more important.

Thank you for listening. If you are interested in getting one of Alex's books you can get it here at the Laymen's Cup Bookstore.

You can always email the show at laymenscup@gmail.com. Please make sure you subscribe on iTunes and leave a review. The more subscribers we get, the more iTunes advertises for us.

We are also selling shirts. You can purchase them at our Shop.

If you would like to buy the coffee we are drinking, and believe me you want to get some of it, go to our support page and follow the link. There are several other ways you can support our show there as well.

Thank you for listening. We are praying for you, as we hope you are praying for us.
