Laymen's Cup Podcast

The Laymen are four men, who love God first, then their wives and children. We have a deep desire to study God’s Word and to live on mission for him. As we study God’s Word, we love to break it down and discuss it in a way that everyone can understand. We are not scholars, even though some of us wish we were. We are normal men with normal jobs trying to figure out how to Glorify God and live a life on mission for him.

If you had the chance to listen to the Bonus Material that was put out on Friday, 12-25-15, you got to see a glimpse of what we do on a daily basis. This is how we spend a lot of our time; discussing theology. If we are not together, we are texting one another. This is what we do. In this show, we continue that conversation. We all agree that the doctrine of election is an open handed issue, but we do believe that it is an important one. In this episode, Shaun asks the others questions that he believes are valid questions from the Bible. One question is: How do we view election in the totality of Scripture?

The opening of the show is a sermon jam from YouTube called "How He Loves Us - David Crowder (Matt Chandler & John Piper)." You can view it here https://youtu.be/suMhQ3ETCyI. This shows what is important to us, and that's the Gospel. We love discussing theology, but we hope our listeners know first, that we are sinners, and because we have sinned, we need a savior. That savior is Jesus, who came to Earth to live the perfect life we couldn't live. Then he died on the cross and took on the wrath of God so that we wouldn't have to. He rose from the dead, and is alive now and because he is alive, we will go and be with him one day.

The four us always have great theological discussions, and most of the time it is off the show. We sat down to record a Friday Preview and a theological discussion broke out. This is a glimpse of what we do though out the week. Merry Christmas and enjoy.

John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..." I have heard it said that God's greatest miracle was creation. Out of nothing, God created the Universe, Earth, and more importantly human kind. The second greatest miracle is that God, the creator, visited his creation in the flesh. In the form of Jesus, God came to Earth to fulfill his promise to redeem his creation.

In theological terms, this is call the Incarnation. This means Jesus came to Earth and was born of a virgin. This idea is clear in scripture, and for the Laymen, this is a closed handed position. In this episode we discuss the importance of this event. Jesus had be born of a virgin.  Not only is this portrayed in the Bible, but for his sacrifice to be perfect, he had to perfect and therefore he could not have been born in the natural way. I do not want to give away the rest of the discussion, but please listen to help grasp the importance of this topic.

We are introducing a new segment in this week's show. "Out of Line: the Atheist Moment of the Week." Atheists try to use the Bible to prove that he does not exist, yet this seems to prove the Bible over and over again.

Thank you for listening. If you check out the show and like what you hear please go onto iTunes and leave a review. If you have any comments or questions you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com.

If you would like to try the coffee we are drinking on the show you can go to Shaun's Coffeeshop and buy a bag.

Lastly, please share the show with your friends and family. It is our goal to get the Gospel to as many people as possible, You can help by sharing us on social media, and most importantly, by word of mouth. Thank you.

Please pray for us as we are praying for you.

In this Friday Preview you will get a rare glimpse of what we do. We started a conversation about speaking in tongues while on a break, and continued it on air. Enjoy.

The Laymen are excited about the Christmas season. No doubt by this time of the year, you have a Christmas tree in your house, stockings might be hung, you might even have lights that decorating the outside of your house as well. Why do we do these things for Christmas? Where do these traditions come from? Can you celebrate this season and still live on mission?  These are important questions that are asked in this show.

What does the Christmas Season mean to you? Is it a time to go and buy presents and see what you get in return? Your motive has a lot to do with how you will spend this holiday season. There seems to be two extremes: one where people immerse themselves in the season, and get lost in the real reason for it, and the other where people do the opposite and refuse to celebrate. Patrick makes a great point that you can be in the middle. Don't seclude yourself away so you can't enjoy the holiday season, but also remember that for us as Christians, we are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, no matter where the tradition came from.

Thank you for listening. It is our mission to share Christ with as many people as possible. The best way for us to grow is for you, our listeners, to share the show. If you would follow us on social media, and share or retweet our posts it will go a long way. You can follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laymenscup. On Twitter and Instagram @laymenscup. Today, we give you a preview of what is coming up in the future, and we have a lot of fun doing it.

Dec 5, 2015

A few weeks ago the Laymen discussed the importance of politics in the episode titled "Does your vote count?" In that show we discussed how important it is for every Christian to be educated in politics and to use that education to vote wisely. In this episode, we discussed politics with the co-author of "One Nation Under God: A Christian Hope for American Politics," Dr. Bruce Ashford.

Dr. Ashford is the Provost and Dean of Faculty for Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Campbell University, his Master of Divinity and Ph.D from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He co-authored "One Nation Under God: A Christian Hope for American Politics with Chris Pappalardo, who is the lead researcher and writer at Summit Church in Raleigh.

In the past episode, one statement the Laymen made was "if you are a Christian and not involved in politics, you should be." We are called to be obedient to our government, and part of that is voting. You should education yourself in what you believe and why you believe it. If this a new concept to you, this book is where you should start. It will teach you the importance of Christians voting their faith. If you are interested in politics already, this book will encourage you in the process of government.

One link we would like to share is Votesmart.org. This the resources Patrick mentions in the show.

This book is out now and you can find it in the Laymen's Cup Bookstore. It is a great read that you will not want to put it  down. Thank you for listening. If you have any comments you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com. If you are listening on iTunes please subscribe and leave a review. You can also find us on all the social media outlets, twitter and Instagram @laymenscup, Facebook.com/laymenscup.

It is our goal to get the Gospel to as many people as possible. To do that we need our listeners to share the show. Go and tell your friends, co-workers, classmates. Ask them to check out four guys who love the Lord, and love to live on mission. Thank you so much.

Pray for us, as we are praying for you.
