In today's episode, we wanted to continue a series we started previously. We started reviewing the most misquoted Bible verses. These verses are commonly used in the culture today, but in most cases they are taken out of context. In the first episode in this series we went over Philippians 4:13. Today we discussed Jeremiah 29:11. If you walk into any Christian Book store will see "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you." It is printed on t-shirts and inspirational posters, and it is meant to be an encouragement to people. The question we ask is: what is God really saying in this verse?
With any verse you read, you must keep in mind the context that it is written in. Jeremiah is writing about a prophesy that God shared with him. This prophesy is foretelling the judgment of God concerning Israel and their disobedience. After discussing this verse, we came to the conclusion that when put in the correct context, this verse is more encouraging than the misinterpretation that is used today.

Last week the Laymen discussed the authority of Scripture. In that episode we stated that as Christians, we need to read the Bible as that is how God reveals Himself to us. The question in this episode is; how do we read the Bible? We all agree that we must read the Bible redemptively. What does that mean? It means that we read the Scripture in the light of the Gospel. Even in the Old Testament, the purpose is to point us to the Cross.
This being a big topic, we invited Dr. Chris Griggs to help the Laymen explain how to read the Bible redemptively and why it is important. If you are a frequent listener, Dr. Griggs is not a stranger to you. He is the Pastor of Denver Baptist Church. The main thought that he gave us is to ask five questions as we read the Bible.
1. How does this passage show the character of God?
2. How does this passage show my need of a savior?
3. How does this passage point me to the cross?
4. How does this passage show us the love of Christ?
5. How does this passage equip me for the mission?

The Laymen
In this Friday Preview we discuss the upcoming episode, where we discuss how to read the Bible. Also we discuss the Refugee situation.
A few weeks ago the Laymen discussed the Reformation. Out of the Reformation came the idea of the Solas. One of them is called “Solas Scriptura,” which means “Scripture Alone.” The idea of this Solas is that Scripture has authority in a person’s life. We do not hold to this because of the Reformation. We believe it because of Scripture itself.
2nd Timothy 3:16 tells us that “All Scripture is God breathed.” We know that the Bible comes from God. Everything that we are to know about God is in His Word. The Bible describes everything we need to know about Salvation, about God’s attributes, and about his mercies. For most Christians, this is not a new revelation, they would be in full agreement. How does this translate in your beliefs? People either hold tradition, experience, or Scripture as their authority. Which one should reign? Whichever one holds the most weight will determine your belief system. After this episode you will be able to determine if a person really holds Scripture as the authority in their lives. Does God still speak? Sure he does, but only through his word.

The Laymen
In this Friday Preview we discuss Monday's episode on the Authority of Scripture and we discuss the red cup issue.
It has started. Now that it has started, it will not stop for an entire year. It is not safe to turn on your radio or tv until the first Tuesday of November, 2016. Of course I'm talking Political ads. Every time we turn on the radio or television there is a commercial or a discussion about politics. During this season of political ads many questions come up. Should I vote? If I vote, will my vote matter? Who should I vote for? These are the questions that the Laymen discuss in this Episode.
As a group, we believe that it is your duty as a Christian to vote. We believe this because Romans 13:1 tells us that we are to be subject to our government. We are subject to our government by obeying laws. We have a unique opportunity to be a part of our government through the process of voting. There is a caveat to our obligation, do not vote unless you are informed. It is dangerous to vote without knowing who and what you are voting for. We encourage our listeners to be informed by doing the research on the candidates and the issues they discuss. Find out what you believe, and more importantly why you believe it.

In this Friday preview we discuss the upcoming episode. In Episode 18 the Laymen discuss politics. We ask the question, why should Christians vote. Thanks for listening. Make sure to check out our website at www.laymenscup.com
In this episode, the Laymen have a discussion about the Reformation. The Reformation was an event that focussed around three men in the 16th Century, Martin Luther, John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli. Through several events, these men attempted to reform the church of the day, but instead, changed the world as we know it.
During the 16th Century the Catholic Church became corrupt. They began to sell indulgences. These were certificates that guaranteed entrance into Heaven. How did you receive one of these certificates? You purchased them. It was a way the church was attempting to raise money. The Reformers realized there was a problem with this and then Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of a church, and history changed forever.
What does the Reformation have to do with us today? Out of the Reformation came an idea of five Solas. They are Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, and Glory to God Alone. As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the ultimate authority. We believe that we are saved through Faith in Christ alone, by His Grace and for His Glory. While all of these ideas are found in the Bible, the Reformation helped us understand them.
