In today's episode, we wanted to continue a series we started previously. We started reviewing the most misquoted Bible verses. These verses are commonly used in the culture today, but in most cases they are taken out of context. In the first episode in this series we went over Philippians 4:13. Today we discussed Jeremiah 29:11. If you walk into any Christian Book store will see "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you." It is printed on t-shirts and inspirational posters, and it is meant to be an encouragement to people. The question we ask is: what is God really saying in this verse?
With any verse you read, you must keep in mind the context that it is written in. Jeremiah is writing about a prophesy that God shared with him. This prophesy is foretelling the judgment of God concerning Israel and their disobedience. After discussing this verse, we came to the conclusion that when put in the correct context, this verse is more encouraging than the misinterpretation that is used today.
