Today we are celebrating our 100th episode. Believe it or not, it's been two years since we sat down and said we wanted to record our conversations and put them out for people to hear. This show has been a blessing to us and we hope it's been a blessing to our listeners. In this show, we reflect on the fun we've had, and some of the tough times, too. It is a blessing to sit in front of these mics every week and seek the truth one sip at a time.
Today we sipped on a Haitian coffee brought to us from a listen who went to Hati on a mission trip. Kemp started a cold brew on Sunday, and on Wednesday, it was great.
We talk all the time about our conversations backstage. For the first time, we are making those conversations available to you. For just a dollar a month, you can hear what goes on, and hear us go off the cuff. Visit us at Patreon.com/laymenscup

Along with every other commandment, the Fifth Commandment is not an easy one to follow. "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you." Exodus 20:12. Two things jump off the page with this Commandment. First, this is starting to point horizontally to our relationship with other people. Secondly, this is the only commandment with a promise. That promise is that if we follow the Commandment, our days will be long.
The main contention in our conversation this week; is honoring and obeying the same thing? Do you have to obey your parents to honor them, and if so, what does that mean for people who have a strained relationship with their parents?

In this show, we discuss the 4th Commandment. It seems simple, right, remember the Sabbath. But even the Sabbath condemns us. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." Exodus 20:8-11
What is the proper view of the Sabbath? In this show, we discuss how people take this commandment out of context and how we should properly view it. We are instructed to work six days, and spend a day focusing and worshipping God.

This week we continue our series on the 10 Commandments. We take on the 3rd Commandment. "You shall not take the name of the Lord God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." Exodus 20:7. Most assume this is concerning our language. We know we should not use his name as a cuss word, but there is so much more than that. How do we revere God's name? Do we approach his name with honor?

Of all the great coffee we've had on the show, sometimes we need a good cup of Dunkin. Kemp treated the boys with good ole cold brew from Dunkin Donuts.

In this show, we discuss the 2nd Commandment. Exodus 20:4-6 states "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I am the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who love me and keep my commandments." We believe as laymen that God is telling us in these verses that we shall not create an image to worship. It seems pretty simple to us.
Apparently, there is a portion of the "reformed" community who believe that any image of God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit is a violation of this commandment. They even have a code for it, "2CV." The question is, if any image of the trinity is a sin, then is a children's Bible that has a picture of Jesus a sin? Or the movie "The Passion of Christ," was it a sin for Mel Gibson to produce this movie, or the actor to play Jesus?

Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me." This the first Commandment. It there a reason this Commandment is first? Why did God start off with this Commandment? In this episode, we discuss these questions and break down the meaning behind it.
When looking at the Commandments you need to ask three questions. What does this tell us about the lawgiver? What does this tell us about the law breaker? How does this point us to Christ?

In the Bible, there are several types of laws. One type is ceremonial. When the Old Testament explains the Tabernacle and the Temple, they are explaining the ceremonial law. Then there are social laws. This is when the Bible tells us to not to eat shellfish or not to get tattoos. These are social laws given to a certain people in a certain timeframe. Lastly, and most importantly, it there is a moral law that is given. The 10 commandments fall under the moral law. They are true and were to be followed when they were given 1400 years before Christ, and they are just as true and should be followed now. The Moral law given is written on our hearts so that everyone knows that they should be followed.
This show is kicking off a series on the 10 Commandments. There is more to it than just 10 rules to follow. There are reasons for them and they are given in an order that has great significance.

Our friend, Stuart, brought us Kean Coffee from California. When you put coffee through a drip coffee maker it is not the strongest, but, when you can taste the back notes of the coffee, like berries, and spices, then you can tell it is great coffee. This is great coffee.

In this episode, we had the privilege of interviewing a friend of the show, Dr. Bruce Ashford. He is provost of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a columnist at Foxnews.com. We had Dr. Ashford on before the primaries to discuss the election. On today's show, we discussed how we are to engage the world with the Gospel. You can read his articles at BruceAshford.net.
For the first time in history, we are in a post-Christian society. What this means is that the church has lost it's voice in society. Where the church used to be the voice of reason, and morality, now the church is thought of as out of date and a source of bigotry. Does the church deserve this designation, and if so, how do we share the Gospel in this situation?
